Munich, the Bavarian capital, located on the River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps, has plenty to do and see. If you’re into science museums, the Deutsches Museum, housed on an island in the River Isar, is one of the oldest and largest in the world, and there are a number of tempting galleries in the Kunstareal. There is also an important Cathedral, the Frauenkirche, which dominates the city centre, and the Baroque style Heiliggeistkirche (The Church of the Holy Spirit) overlooks the Viktualienmarkt, Munich’s most popular market.
Chill out in the Englischer Garten, a park close to the city centre, which is larger than New York’s Central Park and has lots of naked Germans sunabthing, or visit the former royal Hirschgarten, best known for housing the largest beer garden in town. You won’t be surprised to know that Munich is famous for its breweries. Try the Weissbier (wheat beer) a local specialty.
There are around 20 major beer gardens in Munich, with four of the best in the Englischer Garten. To prevent the beer from going to your head, try the hearty local cuisine such as Weisswurst (white sausage), Obatzda (spiced creamy cheese), Haxn (pork knuckle) and cabbage. Have fun!
