Whipsnade Zoo UK: A showpiece among European zoos!
Whipsnade Zoo, previously known as Whipsnade Wild Animal Park is the biggest zoo in the UK and one of the biggest in the whole of Europe. Its 547 acres is still big compared with even some of the largest safari parks in the UK. Like other zoos in the country,Whipsnade offers a remarkable, memorable fun day out in the wild, albeit with one of the best balance of animal species in the country.
The Whipsnade Zoo
Whipsnade Zoo is located at Whipsnade near Dunstable in Bedfordshire, north of England. Itprimarily breeds large mammals within the IUCN's Global Programme, and actually has the largest collection of mammal species than any other zoo in Europe, including big cats, chimps, giraffes, Grevy’s zebra recognisable by their fine stripes and big and majestic herds of elephants.
Since it started, the zoo has specialised in herding animals in wide open spaces. To better manage and provide memorable tours, the zoo is divided in five distinct zones.
Whipsnade zoo division zones
The first three divisions at Whipsnade are represented by the Animals of Africa, the Animals of Asia and the Animals of the North. The fourth zone is the ‘Family Centre,’ which is packed with fun activities and events for the whole family, including falconry displays, sea lion shows and exciting treats at the award winning children’s farm at Whipsnade.
The last zone is known simply as ‘The Downs.’ This is a large open area of hillside where you can stroll or picnic while reveling in the picturesque views of the Aylesbury Vale. The downs, itself a designated a site of special scientific interest (SSSI), is populated with hundreds of red necked wallabies that roam wild and free within the confines of the zoo and makes a stunning place to picnic.
Whipsnade zoo ‘Family Centre’
The ‘Family Centre’ is without a doubt one of the best in Britain. You and the children can meet and touch a variety of animals from the hand-reared calves of the grazing herds to domestic animals of all sorts. The Whipsnade Zoo Family Centre hosts rare breeds of domestic animals that are quite exciting, including Lincoln long wool sheep, redpoll cows and shire horses.
