The Costa Smeralda draws celebrities and even royalty, attracted by its pink white beaches and Il Pevero, one of Europe’s most spectacular golf courses. If you’re prepared to splurge, you can stay at the luxurious Petra Bianca hotel (petrabiancahotel.com) located high above the Cala di Volpe bay.
Its elegant rooms have fabulous sea views, a terrace restaurant and beautiful Mediterranean gardens. The Petra Bianca is situated just 8 km from the glitzy Porto Cervo, famous for its fashionable clubs and night-life. Doubles start at €106.
But if you’re looking for something a little cheaper, try Lu Pastruccialeddu (pastruccialeddu.com), a beautiful 19th-century farmstead located in the hills above Arzachena. A double room plus hearty breakfast starts at €75 per night.
Another good value Bed and Breakfast is the Costa Smeralda (bbcostasmeralda.com) near the harbour of Poltu Quatu in Lu Cumitoni. Breakfast is served in the garden or on a verandah with sea views. Doubles start from €80.
Sardinia’s northern Costa Smeralda is 55 kilometres long and boasts around 80 bays and secluded coves. Many are best reached by hire boats, where you can enjoy the turquoise waters and pristine beaches.
You can also rent a boat and head for the archipelago La Maddalena, which consists of seven large and some smaller islands which are now a national park as they are alive with unique wildlife and vegetation.
