Minimalism may be all the rage but for those of us who still like browsing salvage yards, antique shops and jumble sales in search of a trinket with a history, why not take a weekend break to Madrid and visit the yearly ‘Almoneda’ or Collectors Fair which is on from the 9th to the 17th of April in IFEMA (www.ifema.es), the modern Trade Fair not too far from the city’s Barajas airport.
150 galleries, antique shops, auction houses and collectors from Spain and abroad will be showing over 25.000 items and memorabilia from all over the world. Enjoy a blast from the past at Spain’s most prestigious Fair with anything and everything to catch your eye, from designer furniture items dating from the 1950's to archaeological artefacts, silverware, crystal-ware, dolls, walking-sticks, rugs, lamps, and more, with prices to suit all budgets.
The Collector’s Fair ALMONEDA will be held in Hall number 3 of IFEMA from noon to 21.00, with an entry fee of 8 euros, which includes a practical Guide to what’s on display. After browsing, and maybe splashing out, jump on the metro and head for the centre to taste the Spanish capital’s excellent tapas. If you want to follow in the footsteps of Prince Charles and Camilla, who were in town this week, go to the Mercado de San Miguel, near the Plaza Mayor and the Puerta del Sol. It’s THE place to snack and have a drink, and has now proved fit for Royalty.
