Weekend break ideas in Ireland
Ireland is a perfect option for a weekend break - and with such regular flights between mainland Britain and Dublin, Cork, Belfast and Shannon, you can usually get from your front door to Ireland in uder three hours. Here we look at some of our recommended weekend break ideas for Ireland.
Belfast and the North
Belfast is a city on the rise. The Cathedral Quarter is quickly becoming one of the country's major cultural and nightlife centres, while the Titanic Quarter is gearing up for the celebration of the ship's centenary in 2012. The city's Victoria Square complex is great for a little retail therapy, while independent and local stores can be found dotted around the city centre or lining the trendy Lisburn Road.
The main reason for choosing Belfast as one of our top weekend break ideas is the great range of day trips on offer. Head south to the pristine beaches of Newcastle, and take a walk in the beautiful Mountains or Mourne.
Drive north along the Coast Road for some of Europe's most scenic coastal landscapes, and stop at the Giant's Causeway, Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge and Dunluce Castle.
When Irish city dwellers want a relaxing break away, they head to Donegal. There's a local saying that everyone has their own favourite patch of Donegal, and from the lively Donegal Town to the towering cliffs of Sliabh League, the windswept beaches of Inishowen to the sheltered bays of Rossnowlagh, there is certainly plenty of variety on offer in Ireland's most northerly county.
Dublin is an obvious choice for weekend break ideas in Ireland, but it would be a shame to leave it off the list. Stroll along the banks of the Liffey and admire the Georgian Architecture, visit the Guinness Storehouse for a surprisingly good tour (and free pint!) and enjoy the nightlife of the Temple Bar area.
