Visit Guipuzcoa, in the Spanish Basque Country.
Euskadi, or the Spanish Basque Country, is made up of three provinces, of which Guipuzcoa is the smallest. Its capital is San Sebastian, Donostia in Basque, and it is the city with the largest number of Michelin starred restaurants per square metre in the world!
You may be able to splurge once on a meal produced by a renowned chef but if the wallet doesn’t run to a repeat performance, never fear: there’s the wonderful tradition of ‘pintxo bars’ dotted around the old town where you can have a simple or more elaborate ‘tapa’ for uner €2, although it’s very hard to stop at only one!
Walk off your gastronomic excesses along the prom of the famous La Concha Bay and by seeing the sights this elegant northern Spanish town has to offer. Don’t miss the Miramar Palace, the Kursaal Conference Centre and Concert Hall and the Peine del Viento sculpture.
Out of town, the Aizkorri-Aratz Nature Park and the picturesque village of Goierri are set in spectacular scenery and wine lovers should head to the vineyards of Getaria, where Txakoli, Euskadi’s wine is produced.
