The Alcazar of Seville is the oldest royal palace that is still in use in Europe. In 1987, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site and is constantly being visited by people from all over the world. Located in the heart of Seville, it is easily accessible for anyone needing a break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
The architecture that is seen both on the exterior and interior of the palace is mesmerising and it is easy to get lost in the halls and patios of this place. The surrounding gardens of the Royal Alcazar has green lushness that will overwhelm you along with its sheer size. There are different styles on show throughout the gardens including Italian, French and Arab.
Head to the ticket office that is located inside the Puerta del Leon and purchase adult tickets for €9.50 and children go free at all times. It is open from April to September from 9.30am to 7pm and in October through March from 9.30am to 5pm. A small tip for visitors, if you buy you ticket in advance, you can avoid the long queues and have a little privacy before the large tourists groups find their way into the palace. Audio guides are also available upon request.
This palace may look very familiar as it has been used on the big screen. Movie director Ridley Scott used Patio de las Doncellas in his 2005 historical drama, Kingdom of Heaven. More recently it is being used in the Season 5 HBO hit series Game of Thrones. Various parts of Seville are being used to represent the harsh desert region of Dorne, Alcazar included. Recently during filming, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays the role of Jaime Lannister, had to pay an admission fee due to staff not recognizing him. Remember folks, a Lannister always pays their debts!
