Travelling Solo through the Social Network
Whether it’s Facebook or Couch Surfing that you gaze into for hours on end - or indeed the many other social networking sites that exist out there, it seems that the new traveller is getting to meet the locals everywhere they go.
E-mail is a thing of the past, now it’s a quick Twitter and “Hi, I’m in Berlin this weekend, anyone out there fancy a jar?” Or, “I’ll be arriving in Bogota next week, where should I go?”
The social network is the new Travel Network - or old, if you happen to be over the age of 18 and have had your head buried in a Lonely Planet Guide for too long. Or if you're just a normal human being with an actual life.
By far the best of these sites is Couch Surfing, www.couchsurfing.org where once you make contact and prove you’re not a mass murderer or thunderous snorer, you can find yourself with free accommodation in your destination of choice. And best of all, you get to hang out with locals who are happy to show off their city. You never know, you might even get a goodnight kiss! So log on before you fly off.
