Travel to Menorca island, the sunshine island of Spain.
If you associate all Spain’s Balearic Islands with partying and elbow-to-elbow crowds on the beach, think again. Menorca is quieter than its big-sister island Mallorca and the glitterati-peppered island of Ibiza.
If you’re looking to shun the tourist hordes, travel to Menorca island the sunshine island of Spain and head for the island’s rugged north coast which is less developed than the south and dotted with small pretty coves.
Visit the Parc Natural S’Albufera des Grau, which has given the island Unesco Biosphere Reserve status. The unspoilt beaches of Cap de Favártix, at the northern extremity of the Parc are sufficiently secluded for some real R&R.
Base yourself in Ciutadella, the original capital of Menorca on the island’s unspoilt north-west coast. A good cheap hotel option is the Residencia Oasis (Carrer de Sant Isidre 33, Ciutadella 00 34 971 382197), located in the beautiful historic quarter and has a charming courtyard. Rooms from £50.
Alternatively, stay at the small, friendly Hotel del Almirante Collingwood House (www.hoteldelalmirante.com), the former home of Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, Nelson’s commander-at-sea and legacy of British colonial rule (1713-1802). The hotel, decorated with maritime memorabilia, has 39 rooms, a swimming pool, garden, tennis court and Wi Fi and is a 10 minute taxi ride from the airport and a 15 minute walk from both Mahón and Es Castell. Double rooms start at just €75 per night.4
EasyJet (www.easyjet.com) flies to Mahón Airport during summer (May to October) from London Gatwick, Manchester and Liverpool.
Or if you prefer a flight plus accommodation package, visit cheapholidays.com/menorca/ where you’ll find a return flight from Luton to Mahón departing Friday the 14th of October and returning on the 21st with 7 nights at the three star Barcelo Hamilton for just £211.37 per person (based on 2 sharing), a great price for those looking to travel to Menorca island, sunshine island Spain.
