How to travel light

Travelling light is usually the best plan of action, whether you're taking a weekend break or you're going backpacking for a year. The less things you have to weight you down, the less inconvenient your luggage comes - and the freer you are to enjoy your destination. Here we offer some tops tips on how to travel light...

How to travel light

Take half of want you think you need - There's an old antidote about packing light: divide everything you want to bring into two piles: needs and wants. Disregard the wants. Then pack half of the needs. Although this is quite a brutal way to pack light, it's pretty efficient!

Choose multi-purpose items - A sarong that can also be used as a beach towel; a shampoo that can also be used as a body wash; a mobile phone that can also be used as a torch... all these multi-purpose items can make your packing more efficient and your load a lot lighter.

Remember that you can probably buy items in your destination - You don't have to haul along lots of "just in case" goods. The chances are that if you need it while travelling, you'll be able to buy it on the road. For example, why bring three bottles of suncream when you can buy any extra bottles you may need as you go?

Consider washing your clothes as you go - A small travel wash can allow you to wash and re-wear clothes as you go. This is especially good for longer trips, but can also be useful for two week holidays.

Share the load - One of the best ways to travel light is to coordinate your packing with your travel buddy or buddies. Unless you are travelling solo, the chances are that you can share items while you're away - for example, toothpaste, a first aid kit, a torch or other similar items.
