It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
It’s hard to go anywhere in December and not be surrounded by Christmas related activities. The Christmas lights were turned on at Oxford Street last month and they will continue to twinkle for the month of December so why not take in the Christmas atmosphere with a bit of window shopping.
Better Bankside has teamed up with Southwark Cathedral and Borough Market to bring a St Nicholas Day Christingle Service on Wednesday 4th December. You can register your children to meet Santa and craft a Christingle orange at 4.15pm and there are carols at 5.30pm. The event includes a mulled wine reception around Borough Market's Christmas tree. While the event is free there will be a charity collection during the carols for The Children’s Society.
Hyde Park is being turned into Winter wonderland while most of the attractions are paid, entry to the site, including to the child-friendly Santa Land and the Christmas Market, is free, and an after-dark stroll is surprisingly atmospheric.
Goodbye 2013 – Hello 2014
There is always so much planning and preparation that goes into one night of the year; 31st December. We will send the current year, 2013, into the history books and welcome a new one. If you are ringing in 2014 in London and are a little strapped for cash then get yourself down to the New Year’s Eve Fireworks Display at the EDF Energy London Eye. The zone around the London Eye will be cordoned off but get down early to get a good viewing spot at Victoria Embankment, or at some of the central-most bridges such as Waterloo, Westminster and the eastern Jubilee footbridge.
Best of the rest
For some the objective may be to avoid all Christmas related activities and try something a little different and less festive. The great thing about London is that there is always something to find, and for free.
