In the second part of our guide to the world’s greatest hotel bars, we move on from the tropical lounges of South America and the skyscraper drinking dens of Asia to a little closer to home: Europe, starting right here in good ol’ Blighty. Read Part 1 here.
Coburg Bar at The Connaught, London
The bar’s iconic wingback chairs got a reprieve, but in 2008 this staple of the London hotel bar scene got a dazzling makeover courtesy of India Mahdavi. Their menu still reads like an Encyclopaedia Booztanica with 49 essential selections, some which go back to the 18th century. Carlos Place; Telephone: +44(0)20 7499 7070.
Bar Hemingway, Ritz Paris, Paris
The prices are enough to make Papa Hemingway put another shotgun in his mouth with some tipples at a wallet-emptying 40 euros, but when those drinks are blended by international mixing legend Colin Field, all is forgiven. 15 place Vendôme; Telephone: +33 1-43-16-33-65.
The Bar at Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace, Budapest
A relative newcomer to the list of Europe’s esteemed hotel bars, this young whippersnapper opened its doors in 2004. It's been a bona-fide hit since then, teaming up all manner of Hungarian sausages and hams with the country’s traditional favourite: pálinka ( fruit brandy). Roosevelt tér 5-6; Telephone: +36 1-268-6000.
Hassler Bar at Hotel Hassler Roma, Rome
Get yourself up those Spanish Steps, and reward yourself by ducking into this wee bar. A historic location, it’s the perfect spot for a cheeky aperitif whenever the mood might take you. Campari and soda is a local favorite. Princess Diana went ga-ga for their Bellinis, which tells you all you need to know to visit or avoid like the plague. Piazza della Trinità dei Monti 6; Telephone: +39 06-699-340.
O2 Lounge at The Ritz-Carlton, Moscow
If Russia’s new-found opulence took solid form this bar would be it. A rooftop destination sporting a glass dome, sushi bar, and a breathtaking Moscow view. Outdoor parties until the wee small hours in the summer, restorative vodkas served in ice in the winter. Take your pick. Tverskaya Street 3; Telephone: +7 495-225-8888.
