The World's Best Museums

In a world that has such a long and interesting history it is wonderful that there are museums that hold and preserve artifacts from the past and allow us to enjoy and learn from them. Unfortunately there are too many museums to visit in one lifetime, but here is a list of the world’s best museums.

The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC is the world’s largest research center and museum complex. In total there are 19 museums and galleries that are home to over 137 million objects. Some of the most well-known and popular artifacts are Dorothy’s ruby red slippers from the Wizard of Oz and the original Star Spangled Banner.

Originally built to be used as a fortress, The Louvre in Paris, France now is the largest and one of the most popular museums in the world. It was opened in 1793 and contains over 7,500 paintings including Di Vinci’s famous Mona Lisa, which is protected with bulletproof glass and body guards.

For those that enjoy archeology, The Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece is an archeological museum that should not be missed. Located only a few hundred meters from Parthenon, this museum displays around 4,000 objects, most of which are ancient artifacts that were discovered at the Acropolis site.

State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia is right on the Neva River and is a beautiful Baroque style palace. It is one of the largest and oldest museum in the world and has been open to the public since 1852. There are over 3 million items in its collection, and it is said that if visitors spent only one minute visiting every exhibit on display, it would take 11 years, so a guided tour might be the best option.
