The fashionable and exclusive Soho House chain is expanding to Europe for the first time with the upcoming launch of a 40 room hotel and club in a late-Bauhaus listed structure in Berlin. Once again, Soho House boasts its trademark heated rooftop pool, this time perched atop the city’s fashionable Mitte district. Quite what the locals will make of the transatlantic posing elite’s choice hangout on their doorstep is anyone’s guess, but chances are they’ll be won over by the plans to incorporate a healthy dose of good old-fashioned glamour at the venue.
Inspired by the look and feel of Germany in the 1930s and 1940s, the new Soho Haus(!) will be decked out in shiny mirror and marble from head to toe. As if that wasn’t enough, guests’ rooms will be styled individually to reflect Berlin’s fashion history. Anything goes, from lovingly realised Art Deco-themed rooms to those with stripped down industrial zone minimalism, complete with retro record players to complete that Ostalgie feel. Spin on that, iPod docks!
Just make sure you don’t get carried away and proclaim “Ich bin ein Berliner” as John F. Kennedy infamously did in 1962, not realising that some people thought he was saying he was a “doughnut”. After that you’ll need to down your dirty martini and get your coat sharpish.
Soho House Berlin opens its doors in May 2010, with room rates starting at €125. It joins existing worldwide locations in New York, West Hollywood, London’s Soho, Notting Hill, Chiswick, Shoreditch and Somerset.
