The Canary Islands: something for everyone.
With year-round good weather, varied island landscapes and Mediterranean cuisine, the Canaries, off the coast of north-west Africa, are a popular destination for European tourists at any time of year. Tenerife is the most visited island, with its blue-flag improved beaches and Spain’s highest mountain, El Teide. However, the Gay Pride celebration, held recently in May, has put Gran Canaria firmly on the map as arguably the preferred gay holiday destination in southern Europe.
The Yumbo shopping mall was at the heart of the Gay Pride celebrations and in the evening becomes an important nightspot for gay partying. Another popular location is the last bar (‘el ultimo’) on the Maspalomas beach, while the Boulevard Faro which runs along the Maloneras beach is more for families, with a good selection of shops, cafés and restaurants.
The Plaza Farray in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a quieter area where locals and tourists alike enjoy drinks and tapas, and Mesa y López Avenue is a must-stop with its fashion boutiques which tempt the purse. Home to the Atlantic Centre for Modern Art, the Vegueta colonial area is also worth a visit as is the nearby Calle Triana, with its specialist shops and cafés.
Easy Jet (www.easyJet.com) flies to Gran Canaria (Las Plamas) from London Gatwick and Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) from a number of UK airports.
