In Switzerland, responsibility for deciding on public holidays rests with the 26 cantons. On public holidays most banks, offices, shops and some restaurants close, although police stations, hospitals and larger shops remain open. Consequently, it is a good idea to keep track of the various holidays in the various regions of Switzerland especially if you are planning on visiting. The following are the Swiss holidays: 2011 calendar year.

1 Janaury (Sat): New Years Day

This is a national holiday observed by all the cantons

2 January (Sun): Saint Berchtold’s Day

This is a regional holiday observed in the cantons of Aargau, Bern, Fribourg, Glarus, Jura, Lucerne, Neuchatel, Obwalden, Schaffhausen, Solothurn, Thurgau, Vaud, Zug, and Zurich

6 January (Thu): Epiphany

This regional holiday is observed in Graubünden, Lucerne, Schwyz, Ticino and Uri

1 March (Tue):  Republic Day

This holiday is only observed in Neuchatel canton

19 March (Sat): St. Joseph’s Day

This regional holiday is observed in Graubünden, Lucerne, Nidwalden, Solothurn, Schwyz, Ticino, Uri and Valais

22 April (Fri): Good Friday

This is a national holiday observed in all the cantons with the exception of Ticino and Valais

25 April (Mon): Easter Monday

National holiday in all of Switzerland with the exception of Valais

1 May (Sun): Labor Day

Regional holiday in Basel-Landschaft, Basel-Stadt, Fribourg, Jura, Lucerne, Neuchatel, Schaffhausen, Solothurn, Thurgau, Ticino and Zurich

2 June (Thu): Ascension Day

National holiday in all the cantons

13 June (Monday): Whit Monday

National holiday observed in all the cantons except Valais

29 June (Wed): St Peter and St Paul

Regional holiday in Graubünden, Ticino

1 August (Mon): National Day

The only federally mandated holiday, this is observed in all the cantons

15 August (Mon): Assumption

A regional holiday in Aargau, Appenzell Inner Rhodes, Fribourg, Jura, Lucerne, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Solothurn, Schwyz, Ticino, Uri, Valais, Zug

8 September (Thu): Jeune Genevois

19 September (Mon): Day after the Federal Fast

Regional holiday in Bern, Neuchatel, Vaud

1 November (Tue): All Saints’’ Day
