Stroll along the Brooklyn Bridge
One of the gorgeous landmarks that you must visit on your New York holiday is the Brooklyn Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. Spanning 1600 ft long, the bridge connects New York City’s neighbourhoods of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The gothic architecture of the 2 towers supporting the bridge is a sight to behold, especially at night when the bridge is lit up. The towers stand 277 ft high; anchors hold the cables at the top, and every one of the 4 main cables has 19 strands, which are composed of 278 parallel wires. This sturdy bridge has been as symbolic of New York’s cityscape as the ruined Twin Towers, the World Trade Center.
For cheap thrills and panoramic views of the city from either Manhattan or Brooklyn, try walking leisurely across the bridge. The view, immortalised in TV series such as Friends, Ugly Betty, and Sex and the City, becomes even more exciting as you come closer to the Manhattan skyline, which looms over the East River.
The bridge has always been the subject of American jokes, especially the one where con men try to sell gullible visitors a piece of the bridge or “lovely riverside property in Brooklyn.”
