Stocking up on Stockholm Memories: A Guide to Your Holidays

14 islands sitting between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea make up city of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. A holiday in the “Venice of the North” will have visitors traipsing between mediaeval buildings and great ships.

Wander into Drottningholm Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the 17th century. Within the palace is Museum De Vries, where bronze figures by Dutch sculptor Adriaen de Vries can be admired. Watch a ballet performance in an 18th century setting at the Court Theatre, a well-preserved structure which continues to use centuries-old stage machinery. The Palace Park is impressive too, dotted with marble statues, a few canals, and tree-lined avenues. End the tour at the Chinese Pavilion, a birthday surprise from King Adolf Fredrik to Queen Lovisa Ulrika in 1753.

Delve deeper into the past with a trip to the Old Town during a holiday in Stockholm. Cobblestone lanes, horse-drawn carriages, and assorted sculptures – from abstract art to important personages – are part of this enthralling place. There are loads of cafés, restaurants, and museums to choose from. The highlight, however, is the Royal Palace, the largest building here, with 600 rooms. It’s easy to get lost in the treasury, where the imperial jewels, costumes, and objects are kept. Learn all about the coveted prize at the Nobel Museum, and get to know all about the man behind it, Alfred Nobel. One of its recent exhibitions is called “Cultures of Creativity,” dedicated to the Laureates, their work, and their environments.

Explore the oldest open-air museum in the world, Skansen, the address of more than a hundred historical buildings in Stockholm. The Town Quarter takes guests back to 19th century Sweden, while The Countryside brings them to farming provinces. There is also a zoo inside, the residence of Nordic animals like the wolverine, brown bear, and seal.
