Travelling from Southampton to France by ferry
Southampton itself only offers ferry crossings to Ryde on the Isle of Wight. Fortunately though, if you live in or near Southampton it's still easy to get a ferry to France, as the nearby city of Portsmouth runs them, and it's just a quick twenty minutes by car or 45 minutes by train between the two.
The biggest company to operate out of Portsmouth is Brittany Ferries. They provide ferries from Portsmouth to St. Malo, Caen and Cherbourg, giving passengers a choice of destinations in France. Prices are variable but competitive, and they operate high speed ships which can cross to nearby Cherbourg in as little as two hours. You can check them out and book online at brittany-ferries.co.uk.
Condor Ferries also operate ferries from Portsmouth to France, however they only go to Cherbourg and only run once a week, so lack the flexibility or convenience of Brittany Ferries. You can book with them at condorferries.co.uk.
The only other ferry company that sails between Portsmouth and France is LD Lines. They run ferries between Portsmouth and Le Havre at similar prices to those offered by Brittany and Condor, so the only thing to choose between them really is where you'd rather sail to. You can book at ldlines.co.uk.
Although none of these operate out of Southampton, they all operate close enough that you can almost get from Southampton to France by Ferry, and with three different ferry companies and four different French destinations you'll be spoilt for choice.
