Begin your Auckland holiday by venturing into the Sky Tower, an impressive city landmark that offers unique facilities and exhilarating activities. Designed by New Zealand Institute of Architects National Awardee Gordon Moller, the tower measures 328 metres high, and is the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere and the 12th tallest in the world.
Exciting challenges await thrill-seeking visitors. “Live on the edge” with SkyWalk and circle the Sky Tower’s outer perimeter on a ledge 192 metres high, held only by a safety harness. Daring sightseers can stop at several points to take pictures, learn how the tower was constructed, and enjoy views of Auckland and the harbour, all while perched high above the ground!
Adventurers looking for more thrills must take the SkyJump, a 192-metre “base-jump by wire” that sends daredevils free-falling for 16 seconds at roughly 75 kph. New Zealand’s highest jump and a world-first in the adventures league, SkyJump uses a device that allows jumpers to simply “fall fast and smooth,” on the way to a safe landing.
Exploring the tower is an exploit in itself, and the ideal alternative for travellers who would rather keep their adrenaline levels normal. Enjoy a cup of coffee 182 metres above the ground in the Sky Lounge, or observe panoramic views from the main observation level, which houses live-camera touch-screen computers and the highest post box in the Southern Hemisphere. Climb up four metres higher to the Orbit, where an award-winning restaurant with ala-carte New Zealand dishes await. Local seafood delicacies in brasserie-style buffet can be enjoyed in The Observatory, set at a height of 192 metres. The Sky Deck, the highest observation level, punctuates the Sky Tower experience, providing 360-degree views across Auckland through its seamless glass, 220 metres above the ground.
Sky Tower is open on Sundays to Thursdays, from 8:30 am to 10:30 pm. Operating hours are extended until 11:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
