Sicily, the Canary Islands or Marrakech: you don’t have to spend a small fortune to get some winter sun.
Those of us who can’t afford a tropical winter break in the Caribbean or Asia should not despair. There are other ways of escaping the winter chill. Why not follow in the footsteps of our 19th century forefathers who wintered in stylish Mediterranean retreats such as the French and Italian Rivieras, or the Amalfi Coast?
Those who could, headed there because the climate was so much better than at home, reports the Daily Mail. You may not get a sun tan, but you will get good deals on flights and hotels, escape the tourist hordes and in some places be able to go out in just a sweater.
Try the Canary Islands for mild weather or Marrakech in Morocco, both served by no-frills airlines. Taormina on the east coast of Sicily is stunning, with beautiful views towards Mount Etna, and has plenty of great places to eat and hang out. Easy Jet flies to Catania.
If you want to stay a little closer to home, try the French Riviera, much more enjoyable off season. Easy Jet fly to Nice, but Cannes, a short, cheap train ride away, has more class. From here you can easily get to Antibes or St Tropez. It's much better than shivering at home!
