If you want to take a pre-Christmas city break, are basically a townie, but so many short haul city destinations on offer seem just a tad too well known, we’ve searched the web and come up with the following non-touristy alternative, recommended by the Financial Times.
‘Forget Venice, try Treviso’ is sound advice for those easily worn down by the tourist hordes. Treviso (pictured), just 20 minutes by train from Venice, offers canals, old stone churches, attractive piazzas and wonderful restaurants too, but its inhabitants are less used to foreign visitors and less likely to hike the price when they see you coming.
That’s good news, as Treviso, like many northern Italian towns, is a fashionista’s dream, with the Via Clamaggiore offering plenty of luxury boutiques to tempt the purse. You’re sure to find something special to wear for that dress-to-impress New Year’s Eve party. The town is also home to the headquarters of clothing retailer Benetton.
Visit the 12th-century Duomo (Cathedral), the Early Gothic church of San Francesco and the Casa dei Carraresi Museum. The building dates back to the 13th century, and has been lovingly restored to become the most important venue of temporary exhibitions in the city.
Ryanair fly to Venice-Treviso from London Stansted, Leeds, East Midlands and Dublin.
