San Sebastian: the tapas capital of Spain.
The elegant and stylish Basque city of San Sebastian is located 90km east of Bilbao and just 50km from Biarritz so it’s remarkably easy to get to. It boasts one of the best ‘city beaches’ in Europe, La Concha, where you can sunbathe and swim against a backdrop of historic buildings and churches.
At the West end of La Concha bay, lies Mount Igueldo which offers a great view of the town from the top, (there’s a cable car if you’re feeling lazy!) and at the far right of the beach there’s an aquarium. Surfers should head to La Zurriola beach to the east of the old town where the waves promise a thrill and you can rent surfboards, body boards and wetsuits.
Stroll in La Parte Vieja (the old town) where you’ll find a host of smart boutiques and plenty of tapas bars. The ‘tapa’ is said to have been invented in Andalusia, but San Sebastian has walked away with the prize, gaining a reputation as having the best tapas (or pintxos, as they’re known locally) in Spain.
The bars are piled high with amazing goodies, from prawns to wild garlic mushrooms. Choose what takes your fancy and the waiter keeps tabs. It’s de rigueur to go bar hopping as each bar has its own speciality. It’s not surprising the city has become a magnet for food and wine lovers!
