Rules on Ryanair baggage size for 2014

The budget airline has realised, belatedly, that its rigid rules on cabin baggage have antagonised customers for years. Although it has relaxed its daunting penalties for oversized carry-on bags and adopted a more flexible attitude, it's still worth being aware of the restrictions on Ryanair baggage size in 2014 before you travel.

Ryanair rules

For years, Ryanair and its ebullient boss Michael O'Leary prided themselves on their no-frills attitude to customer service. After consistent bad feedback though, the company has attempted to soften its image.

Part of the change is a less-rigorous attitude to passengers' cabin baggage, although this may vary from airport to airport, depending on local staff. It makes sense for travellers to be fully aware of the rules on Ryanair baggage size in 2014 before flying, to avoid costly surcharges at the airport.

Ryanair's updated website offers the specifics on cabin and hold baggage. For hold baggage, travellers can purchase an allowance of 15 or 20 kilos in up to two bags. The allowance can be pooled with other passengers travelling on the same reservation.

Cabin bags can weigh up to 10 kilos, with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. Departure terminals usually have a Ryanair baggage stand where you can check that your bag complies with the regulations.

Under pressure from the airport duty-free shops, Ryanair and other airlines relented and allowed travellers a duty-free shopping bag measuring up to 35 x 20 x 20 cms, in addition to their cabin bag.

In some situations, with busy flights, some cabin bags may need to be stowed in the hold, but this is free of charge.

Avoid the surcharges

With clear information available about Ryanair baggage size in 2014, it makes sense to avoid costly penalties. Book hold baggage at the same time as the flight to get the lowest rates, and ensure that your bags don't exceed the weight limits. Leave some spare capacity on the outward flight if you intend to bring back souvenirs.
