There’s life in the desert, and it’s certainly kicking in Dubai! The largest city of the seven emirates in United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the star of the Middle East, Dubai is an oasis of posh hotels, shopping districts, and out-of-this-world architecture. It’s also fast becoming one of the most celebrated tourist destinations in the world.
Your Dubai holiday begins with a shopping spree at the Deira covered souk, a traditional textile market near the Al Sabkha Bus station. You’ll also find here kitchenware and appliances at low prices. Head to Gold Souk, and be mesmerized by the glitter of the jewellery being sold there. Put your haggling skills to the test as you bargain for emeralds, sapphires, rings, bracelets, and watches.
Enjoy extreme fun in Dubai’s premier water park, Wild Wadi. The Jumeirah Sceirah is the star attraction of the park, and the “tallest free-fall water slide outside North America” cascades 33 metres at a speed of 80 kilometres per hour. Other breathtaking rides are the Master Blaster, also known as “uphill water roller coasters,” and Flowriders, which provides an ultimate “surfing” experience.
If you’d rather stay dry, enjoy a desert safari where you can go dune bashing (exploring the sand dunes aboard an off-road vehicle), quad biking, sand skiing, and camel riding.
Your Dubai holiday won’t be complete without a good look at its exceptional architecture. Visit the Palm Islands, which make up the three largest man-made islands in the world: Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali, and Palm Deira. Shaped like a stylised palm tree on the Dubai coast, these islands are also known as The Palm Trilogy and The Palms, and are considered by many as one of the great feats of human engineering.
