Thinking of going to Portugal on holiday? Let us advise you on where to go

If you’re planning your next year’s summer break and have a Portugal holiday in mind, you may well be thinking of the Algarve. How can you not be tempted by the fabulous beaches with mile upon mile of golden sands, balmy weather and excellent fish and seafood washed down by a good Douro wine?

Where to go and what to do in Portugal

If you do choose the Algarve for your Portugal holiday, remember it’s a renowned golfers’ paradise with lush greens and the perfect weather to practise your swing. The Algarve enjoys an Atlantic sea breeze which means you can avoid the searing summer heat of the southern Mediterranean and bask in pleasant temperatures of around 28 degrees, or join in the many sports activities on offer, such as horse riding, tennis and water sports.

You’ll find most of the lush green golf courses in the Central Algarve, in well known tourist areas such as Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura and Albufeira, which also have tennis schools on hand such as the Vilamoura Tennis Centre (+351 289 302 369) or the Jim Stewart Tennis Academy in Quinta Do Lago (+351 289 398 848), just two of the many.

If you’re taking the family, head for the Zoomarine theme park (zoomarine.pt) located on the outskirts of Albufeira where you can swim with the dolphins, or to Aqualand (aqualand.pt) a family water park 15 km from Albufeira with some daredevil rides. Take a jeep safari to go happily off track and explore the beautiful countryside peppered with almond and olive trees.

Another reason to choose the Algarve is the excellent choice of package holidays on offer with unbeatable prices. Cosmos (cosmos.co.uk), Easy jet (holidayseasyjet.com) and Thomas Cook (thomascook.com) all have great deals to southern Portugal and First Choice (firstchoice.co.uk) is offering all inclusive holidays to the Algarve.

For example, visit the Thomas Cook website and you’ll find 7 nights self catering accommodation near Faro with flights from just £316 based on two people sharing. This is a saving of £53 per person. Fly from Glasgow, Manchester and Luton airports amongst others.

If you prefer to organise your own trip to the Algarve, it couldn’t be easier, with a good choice of budget flights available. Fly to Faro from Belfast, Bristol, Glasgow, Liverpool, London and Newcastle with Easy Jet (easyjet.com) or with Ryanair (ryanair.com) from no fewer than 11 UK airports.

There are so many reasons to visit Portugal!

Going to Portugal on holiday is not only a safe option weatherwise but a reasonably priced one too! There are some excellent package deals on offer, cheap flights and hotel accommodation available if you prefer to plan your own itinerary, and the cost of living in Portugal is low so you can also enjoy a little retail therapy too.
