The place was never intended to be a tourist destination in the first place.
It was meant to pay tribute to a little girl who drowned mysteriously several years ago.
It is believed that her spirit is possessed by dolls.
The island is home to hundreds of macabre-looking dolls.
You will find decapitated heads and severed limbs hanging from trees.
According to a local legend, these dolls move opening their eyes and turning their heads.
Witnesses also recount that the dolls even whisper to each other.
There are claims that these dolls lure people to the islands.
All the above are of course tales and probably exaggerated.
The island looks creepy though to the casual visitor.
The truth is Don Julian Santana Barrera who was the caretaker of the island did find a little girl who drowned in mysterious conditions.
He could not save the girl from drowning.
After that, he saw a floating doll near the canals.
It was presumed that the doll belonged to the little girl.
As a sign of respect to the drowned girl, Don Julian hanged the doll on a tree.
However, it seemed that Julian was haunted by the spirit of the little girl and to appease her, he hanged more dolls on trees.
Don Julian also realised that these dolls are possessed by the spirits of dead girls.
He continued to hang more dolls on trees.
It was also believed that Don Julian was possessed by an unknown spirit that lead him to do these things.
Another theory for the haunting was the fact that he was unable to save the little girl's life.
The caretaker continued to collect dolls hanging them all over the island for at least 50 years.
In 2001, he was found dead in the same spot where the little girl died. He drowned.
The locals are convinced that the island is a charmed place.
The island soon became a tourist attraction where visitors can bring in more dolls.
Isla de las Munecas has become famous. It was featured on reality TV shows and articles were written about it in magazines.
