Autumn is the perfect time to visit Nice, France.
Nice in France is the unofficial ‘capital’ of the glitzy Côte d'Azur, which is amongst the most sophisticated destinations in the world. But you don’t have to have pots of money to enjoy the wide seafront boulevards, the chic shopping streets and the pretty squares. Nice is well served by budget airlines Easy Jet (easyjet.com) who fly there from no fewer than nine regional airports, including Liverpool, London and Newcastle. A return flight comes in at under £150.00, depending on dates. Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) also flies to Nice from Dublin and flybe(flybe.com) from a number of UK destinations.
And late September is definitely the time to go, when the weather is still warm but the pack has dwindled, so you can see this playground of the rich and famous in all its charm. Wander the narrow streets of the Vieille Ville (Old Town) with its street cafés and restaurants, visit the Cours Saleya market, the galleries and shops in the Palace Masséna and art lovers should not miss the Musee Marc Chagall. You can also join the locals in a stroll along the prom, the famous Promenade des Anglais.
Nice airport is also gateway to the renowned French Riviera with its resorts such as Antibes, Cannes and the evocative St Tropez, associated with the very, very rich and lots of bling. If you’re into celebrity spotting, then this is the place for you.
If you prefer a quieter coastal scene, visit the terracotta-hued, fishing port of Villefranche-Sur-Mer with its steep cobblestone streets. This was a favourite of Jean Cocteau’s, who painted the frescoes in the 17th-century Chapelle St-Pierre. Beyond the port is a sandy beach with great views of the town where you can chill out and watch the world go by.
As you can see, there are plenty of reasons to travel to Nice France in early autumn, so book your flight now. Bon Voyage!
