Madrid: summer in the city.

Madrid hots up in the summer with temperatures in the high thirties, so get into the seasonal pace with early morning sightseeing, a long siesta after lunch, then go partying at night when the sun goes down. The Spanish capital organizes a great summer festival called Los Veranos de la Villa to keep you entertained, which runs from the 3rd of July until the 28th of August.

Legendary groups Kool and the Gang, amongst others, opened the concerts at the Puerta del Angel and other artists to perform include Chicago, the Beach Boys, Blind Boys of Alabama, Mavis Staples and Cyndi Lauper as well as well known Spanish groups.

A venue not to be missed is the beautiful Sabatini Gardens near the Royal Palace where you can see Flamenco performances, Bolero and local dances as well as a performance of Swan Lake and the Barber of Seville. And if you’re looking for somewhere to take the kids, head for the city’s main sprawling Retiro Park for puppet shows. Go to www.veranosdelavilla.com for details of the full programme.

Madrid is hot, hot, hot in August but as a consequence you can find good deals on hotels prices and flights and with air conditioned hotels it’s a great option for sun lovers. Its airport, Barajas, is well served by a number of budget airlines as well as British Airways and Aer Lingus, both offering low prices.
