Madrid sights : Palacio Real De Madrid

Madrid, Madrid, with its impossibly beautiful women and suave and sophisticated hirsute men being all laid-back and nonchalant and effortless. Why does Spain do everything better than in England? Even the Spanish Royal Family are way better than the Windsors. For a start they’re much better looking, they reside (kind of) in the Spanish capital which is like living in isntlifesuperville, and they exude cool.

So if you’re visiting Madrid maybe take a look at how their ‘ruling’ family lives - yes, it's better than ours! The Palacio Real de Madrid is their Buckingham Palace, i.e. the royal family don’t really live there - they’ve got a semi with a caravan out on the outskirts of Madrid but this is where they come for their posh dinners, weddings and the like.

Tourists can poke around it on a rainy day (it's open to the public except when the Royals are using it.) Much as you’d expect from a Royal Family, this palace in Madrid is stuffed full of sparkly treasures like sculptures, nice chairs and tables, gold and silver, Royal Armoury and trinkets dating back to the 13th century.

As well as some famous paintings by artists such as Caravaggio, Velázquez, Goya, Juan de Flandes and many others, the Palacio Real de Madrid houses the world's only complete Stradivarius string quartet. Which is probably quite exciting if you’re into string instruments. Don’t touch them if you didn’t understand what that was about. It’s really not worth the hassle.
