From capital of the world to the modern metropolis, the Eternal City of Rome has been a holiday magnet for visitors from all corners of the globe for generations.
Where else can you experience such sights as the Colosseum or St Peter's Square, buy the ultimate designer fashion, make a wish in the Trevi Fountain or just people watch sipping a rich Italian coffee in an al fresco café? The list is endless!
The city's treasures don't stop there. There are some magnificent places to stay in Rome, among the finest hotels in Italy, if not the world.
We did a little Roman research and found some simply dazzling five-star hotels.
- Exedra - This stunning neo-classical building is every inch the classic Italian beauty. With its high white ceilings and plush furnishings, the lobby provides an elegant welcome, like being greeted by an old friend of whom you are rather in awe! La Frusta restaurant is grand yet contemporary, while Tazio Brasserie, named after paprazzi pioneer Tazio Secchiaroli features fascinating photgraphy. The hotel spa has a range of relaxing and revitalising treatments - but the jewel in the crown is a rooftop pool with spectacular city views.
- Grand Hotel Plaza - With so many places of interest just a stroll away, this is a perfect destination for a romantic break. The Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese Park and the Vatican are all close by. This former convent is blessed with traditional good looks, amid stately marble floors and soaring ceilings. The lush citrus grove which gives The Lemon Terrace its name provides a panorama of the city during the summer. For fashionistas, head to nearby shopping street Via Condotti for the latest from Gucci, Versace and Prada.
