Ireland is wet but it has some great hotels

You are going to get rained on and soaked if you go to Ireland whether in January, July or...well fill in the other 10 months yourself. So, you might as well splash out on a decent night’s sleep in between soakings.

I’m a celebrity Carton House, in Co Kildare, cartonhouse.com, has accommodated A-listers such as Ronaldo, Claudia Schiffer, Phillip Treacy and Mario Testino. Join their ranks by sleeping on bespoke four-poster beds with Irish-made Respa mattresses, Egyptian-cotton sheets and feather mattress toppers. Two nights B&B, with champagne and strawberries on arrival, and a four-course dinner costs from €187.50pps – not a bad price to pay for keeping dry.

If you’re more of a rock star then go wild and request the mauve bedroom at Castle Leslie, in Co Monaghan castleleslie.com. Its bed, original to the room, has accommodated Swedish royalty as well as rock nobility, in the form of Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney – not at the same time we hope. It also features a roll-top bath. One night’s B&B with dinner on St Valentine’s night is €165pps, with champagne and chocolates in the room.

Or you could always save a fortune and grab the local B&B - that way you’ll get to spend the night in the room that looks and smells like Shane MacGowan just vomited....
