Just two hours flight time from London, Gothenburg, on Sweden’s rich west coast, is the ideal place for a weekend city break. It makes a change from the more well trodden European cities but still has that urban edge, albeit it a laid back one.
One draw for foodies is the abundance of lively fish restaurants, serving the best of the local catch, with lobster, crayfish, oysters, mussels and prawns prominent on the menu. The city boasts no fewer than five Michelin-starred restaurants along with a number of water front cafés. Its large innovative fishmarket, Feskekorka, is a must-stop. Visit the trendy cobbled streets in the Haga district for boutiques and atmosphere.
Gothenburg has a small network of canals, so take a boat trip along the waterways and out into its busy harbour. You can also visit the hands-on Maritime Museum where you can go inside a submarine and the city museum which is housed in the former headquarters of the Swedish East India Company.
If you’re taking the kids, Liseberg claims to be the largest amusement park in northern Europe and has some awesome attractions and live music, making it popular with adults too.
Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) flies to Gothenburg from London Stansted and Edinburgh, Easy Jet (www.easyJet.com) from London Gatwick and Manchester and British Airways began a direct flight this year and has some good flight-hotel deals. Visit www.ba.com for current offers.
