If you’re looking for a last minute weekend break close to home, throw a suitcase in the car and catch the final weekend of the world’s biggest marksmen’s fair in Hanover, the capital of the State of Lower Saxony. The town gets high with over 250 breathtaking rides and the help of the local tipple, ‘Lüttje Lage’ which is served in the five large beer tents.
Take advantage of the special tour package on offer (call +49 511 12345 333) which includes a night in a double room with breakfast in a four-star hotel, a voucher for funfair rides and a ‘Lüttje Lage’ set to loosen you up.
Hanover was one of the hardest hit cities during World War II, leaving it with only a few historical landmarks, however it does have an attractive reconstructed Old Town, some late-19th-century residential areas, large parks and gardens, a Royal Palace and you can yacht and canoe on the beautiful Lake Maschsee. There’s also a good pedestrian shopping area to tempt the purse.
For those who prefer to fly, Air Berlin (www.airberlin.com) flies to Hanover from London Gatwick for under €150 in July and also has flights from London City and Manchester.
