Explore Europe with German Wings flights
The German Wings budget airline offers a host of useful routes linking eastern and western European capitals and resorts. By studying the flight schedules it is possible to find the most economical way to jet around the continent or to plan city breaks and longer stays in some of Germany's historic cities.
The hub of the German Wings flight network is at Cologne-Bonn, although many flights also connect at Stuttgart and Berlin Schoenefeld. There are direct UK connections to London Stansted, London Heathrow, Edinburgh and Manchester. Affiliated airlines also link up with airports at Aberdeen, Birmingham and Newcastle.
The German Wings service is useful as an alternative to charter flights to Greece in summer. With connections to Mykonos, Kos, Crete, Corfu, Athens, Santorini and Rhodes, it is possible to arrange your own flight and accommodation deals to the Greek beaches, allowing flexibility on dates and destinations.
German Wings operates a slightly different booking system from most budget airlines. You are given a choice of three fares for your chosen journey: Basic, Best and Flex. Basic is the no frills option; Best includes seat selection, luggage allowance and a snack and drink; Flex allows you to change your booking if your travel plans change at the last minute. As a rough guide to costs, a Basic ticket from Edinburgh to Cologne starts out at £49.99.
One additional attraction for visitors who want to explore Germany is the airline's Rail & Fly deal. This allows German Wings customers to travel onwards by Deutsche Bahn trains anywhere in Germany for €29.
The small print
The German Wings website is fairly easy to negotiate compared to some of its rival airlines. Fares quoted are inclusive of taxes and charges. The only additional charge that applies is the £8 supplement that will be incurred if you book using a credit card other than VISA Electron or VISA Debit.
