Formentera: the Med’s best kept secret.
Often termed the Med’s best kept secret, the beautiful unspoilt island of Formentera is often forgotten, as sun seekers head for the largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca, or the party island Ibiza. Formentera is the smallest of the Balearic Islands and lies just to the south of Ibiza, from where you can take the ferry to this paradise like island.
The island has 20 kilometres of white sandy beaches and breathtaking turquoise waters for swimming, snorkelling, kyaking and of course chilling out and sun bathing. Of the many magnificent beaches on the island, the southern coast is more protected from the wind. Fans of the island compare Formentera to a Caribbean Island, with the advantage that it’s much cheaper to get to.
The ferry, the only way of reaching the island, arrives at Formentera Port where you can browse the market for clothes, trinkets and stylish modern jewellery and enjoy a meal in one of the excellent restaurants. Work off the calories by hiring a bike and cycling the coastal route round to the Playa de ses Illetes. Nearby Playa de Llevant is another superb unspoilt beach well known for its beauty.
Easy Jet (www.easyjet.com) and Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) fly to Ibiza from a number of UK airports, as do Thomas Cook (www.thomascook.com) Jet2 (www.jet2.com) and Monarch (www.monarch.co.uk).
