Those of you looking for budget airline fares to the north-east of Spain are likely to find themselves on flights to Girona Spain from many UK regional airports.
Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) has used Girona as its Spanish regional hub for several years, and currently provides flights there from no less than 10 UK airports. Its website advertises the attention-grabbing fare of £9.99 one way plus taxes and charges. Once you've added on charges for EU levies, check-in, baggage and credit card payment, you will be nearer to £60 one way, but canny travellers can occasionally find tax-free flights, take hand baggage only and grab a rock-bottom bargain fare.
With regular year-round flights from Birmingham, Bristol, Bournemouth, East Midlands, Glasgow Prestwick, Liverpool, London Luton, London Stansted, Manchester and Newcastle, Ryanair has got most of the UK covered. This will decrease somewhat in October 2011 though, when the airline plans to discontinue some routes, due to cutbacks on the Girona hub. Check the website for updates.
As an alternative to Ryanair, Thomson Flights (www.flights.thomson.co.uk) offer flights to Girona Spain from the UK, specifically from Birmingham, London Gatwick and Manchester. This may be the ideal choice if you are looking for a package deal including accommodation, on the Costa Brava or in Barcelona.
On arrival at Girona, it is possible to take a direct bus to Barcelona. Taking a little over an hour, the fare is €12 one way, or €21 return. There are also regular buses serving the resort towns of the Costa Brava. Check to see whether your resort is north or south of the airport as there are 2 buses heading in opposite directions. Fares start at €8.
