Fastest ferry to France
If you are planning to take a quick trip across the channel, you want to find the fastest ferry to France. You want to spend your time in France enjoying your visit, not sitting around waiting to get there.
What You Need to Know
To start, there actually is no fastest ferry across the channel. All ferries are going to take about the same amount of time to go from the UK to France. Where the differences lie are from where you depart and arrive. The most used route going to France is from Dover to Calais, and no matter which ferry you take, it will take approximately 90 minutes to make the crossing. An alternate route is from Dover to Dunkirk, which takes a bit longer at around 2 hours, but this is cheaper.
If you are really in a hurry, the fastest way is to actually put your car on a train and go through the Eurotunnel. This only takes about 35 minutes.
There are three major companies with ferry crossings to France that depart several times a day.
PO Ferries, poferries.com, 07816 64 2121, Dover to Calais
Sea France, seafrance.com, 0871 423 7119, Dover to Calais
DFDS Seaways, dfdsseaways.com, 0871 574 7235, Dover to Dunkirk
Cost of Fares
The fare you will pay will depend a great deal on the time of day you are travelling. ‘Red eye’ trips are the cheapest and peak travel times are the most expensive, so plan accordingly. The prices here are for a car and four people. The least expensive round trip from Dover to Calais is about £70. Going from Dover to Dunkirk can cost less than half at £26.
Even though there is no real ‘fastest ferry to France,’ spending 90 minutes on a lovely sea crossing can just be part of the adventure.
