Enjoying nature: autumn colours are truly awesome in Sherwood Forest.

You don’t have to get on a plane to enjoy nature at its best. The Americans take their ‘Fall’ pretty seriously, but autumn is pretty awesome in the UK too. We’ve searched the web and come up with the following location from a list by the Mail, where you can take the family to experience a glorious rainbow of colours and have some fun too.

Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire.

What better way to entice the kids away from their computer than by telling them they’re going to Sherwood Forest? The forest is not only home to one of the largest collections of ancient oaks in Europe, it also contains the 800-year-old Major Oak, in which Robin Hood is said to have hidden. Improbable, it’s true, but it makes a good story and is a great springboard for a game.

Take the family on ‘Robin Hood And The Royal Forest’ walk, one of Sherwood’s two new walks. Starting at the main visitor centre you head west to the Centre Oak on a loop past the hidden memorial cross to King Edwin, ending at St Mary's Church at Edwinstowe, where Robin Hood and Marian were said to have been married.
