Cool summer sunshine in Norway.

The summer months are the perfect time to visit Scandinavia, when that northern chill has abated for a while and you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery in the sun. Why not take advantage of a cheap Ryanair flight and visit Norway’s Haugesund, on the south-western tip of the country. Take a look at the map and you’ll see that it’s not as far away from the UK as it sounds. Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) flies there from Stansted and will get you there in a jiffy.

Apparently Haugesund is where legendary Viking Harald the Fairhead first united Norway as a kingdom over 1000 years ago and its strong Viking heritage remains. The seaside town is a hidden gem, right at the heart of fjord country and you’ll be surrounded by stunning coastal inlets for as far as the eye can see. The nature on offer here is a true stress buster, so slow your pace and enjoy country walks and if you’re into fishing, you can fish in the fjords for free.

Don’t miss the countryside around the Tysvaer area, which inspired the well known Norwegian painter Lars Hertervig to paint some of his famous landscapes. And should you decide to visit in winter, the Roldal ski resort is one of northern Europe’s highest ski bases, and has views that can only be described as dreamlike.
