The young (and young at heart) can walk away from a pricey Christmas this year if prepared to embrace the Christmas spirit and enjoy the camaraderie of shared accommodation. The YHA Edale in the Peak District (0845 371 9514; www.yha.org.uk) has organized a four-night ‘Walking through Christmas’ break from December 23, reports the Telegraph. Full board including Christmas dinner, dormitory accommodation, a present under the tree, transfers from the local railway station and a year’s free YHA membership costs just £189. The daily walks are optional and cover a distance of around six to 12 miles. They are led by an experienced guide and cost just a tad extra. Check out their web site for other destinations throughout the country.
For the more mature but still young at heart, Saga Holidays (0800 414 441; travel.saga.co.uk) are once again organizing their annual festive breaks, with packages offering ballroom dancing, classical music, jazz and bridge to make sure that there’s never a dull moment. For the single person looking for a little company, Bridgewood Manor Hotel in Walderslade near Rochester has a four-night break specifically aimed at solo travellers. Starting on December the 23rd, the £549 full-board rate includes a cruise on the River Medway, a drinks reception, transfers to Rochester and live evening entertainment. Sounds like a good recipe for fun!
