Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, boasts Spain's highest mountain, Mount Teide, in Teide National Park. Mount Teide rises from a volcanic crater with a circumference of 48 kilometres. You can climb the mountain by foot or cheat with a cable car.
Gran Canaria is a world biosphere reserve, protected by UNESCO. Nature lovers will enjoy the rich variety of Macaronesian flowers that are distinct to the Macaronesian islands, pine trees, palm trees and willow groves. Loggerhead turtles and dolphins can be seen from the coast.
Lanzarote has the longest Volcanic Tunnel in the world, the Atlantida Tunnel, which is over 7 km long. While there you can take a guided tour of its underground cave systen, the Cueva de los Verdes or Green Caves. You can also visit the Jameos Del Agua. A ‘jameo’ is a cave with a collapsed roof and the Jameos Del Agua consists of caves like this which have been turned into gardens, restaurants, a swimming pool and an auditorium. If you really want to take some time out from adventure, you can sunbathe on one of Lanzarote’s white beaches, like Playa Blanca or Papagayo.
La Palma, one of the smaller Canary Islands is known as 'La Isla Bonita' like the song by Madonna or 'the beautiful island. Take time out from your stop at the island of La Palma to trek across one of the biggest craters in the world, the Caldera de Taburiente. The astronomical observatory is appropriately at the highest point of the island, on Roque de los Muchachos.
