In summer the Spanish Mediterranean beaches are thronged with British holidaymakers. There are cooler sands and quieter beaches on the Atlantic and the Bay of Biscay, easily reachable by cheap flights to northern Spain.
The regions of the Basque country, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia have spectacular mountains, wild and solitary beaches, fabulous cities and some of Spain's finest seafood. With budget airlines flying from the UK, there's a chance to explore an unspoilt part of Spain.
Easyjet (easyjet.com) flies to Asturias from London Stansted, and to Bilbao from London Stansted and Manchester. Flights to Asturias start at £24.99 for the outward journey and just £14.99 for the return leg. Flights to Bilbao start at £26.99 outbound and £16.99 inbound. All prices include taxes but there are additional charges for hold luggage and credit card bookings.
Ryanair (ryanair.com) offers a number of options for flights to northern Spain. The most useful routes are the direct flights from London Stansted to Santiago De Compostela in Galicia and to Santander in Cantabria.
If you are experienced at navigating your way around the Ryanair website, you should be able to find round trip fares for under £100, even after you've added up all those supplementary charges for baggage, check-in, credit card bookings EU levies and the rest.
Once you've booked your cheap flights to Spain you can get around the regions on the slow but charming coastal railway called the FEVE (feve.es). It stops at every sleepy fishing village and resort town between the Basque lands and Galicia.
