Country guide to Central America

Central America consists of seven nations and is considered to be a subcontinent. Travellers to the region can enjoy an incredibly diverse range of attractions, from lush primary rainforests to ancient Mayan ruins and colourful modern day cities. Here we offer a brief guide to the countries of Central America.

Country guide to Central America

Belize - With over 40% of the country’s area protected in one form or another, Belize is a haven for nature lovers. The mysteries of Maya sites such as Altun Ha or Lamanai are some of the most impressive in Central America.

Costa Rica - For many people, Costa Rica is the epitome of a paradise. The slow pace of life and incredible beauty of the beaches and rainforests attract honeymooners and holidaymakers searching for a relaxing holiday, while the excellent surfing, white water rafting, zip lining and other adrenaline sports make it a mecca for adventure travellers.

El Salvador - Travellers tend to skip El Salvador, but the civil war has been over for 20 years and there are plenty of awesome destinations worth exploring, including pristine beaches, lush cloud forests and the uber-cool city of San Salvador.

Guatemala - Maya heritage is everywhere in Guatemala. The country's beautiful highlands are also a major drawcard, especially Lago de Atitlán. Quetzaltenango is a great place to study Spanish or clib volcanoes.

Honduras - Parque Nacional Jeannette Kawas offers picture perfect white sand beaches fringed by forests teeming with howler monkeys. Lago de Yojoa in the country's lake region is a wonderplace for bird watching and hiking.

Nicaragua - The 'Land of Lakes and Volcanoes' has - you've guessed it - plenty of natural attractions. It also has a thriving cultural scene, particularly in León and Granada.

Panama - Panama is the southernmost country in Central America. Panama’s highlights are still very much off-the-beaten-path destinations, and even the on popular Caribbean archipelago of Bocas del Toro, you might find a whole beach to yourself.
