Combine mountains and Med on your camping holiday in Spain
A camping holiday in Spain is a great option for those looking to save money on accommodation. It's a country rich in scenic splendour and Spain has some of Europe's finest facilities for campers. For those looking to experience the glories of mountain scenery along with some of Spain's liveliest beach resorts, Catalonia makes perfect sense.
From the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean
With bargain flights to Barcelona and Girona from several UK airports it can be very economical to choose Catalonia as a base to locate your camping holiday in Spain.
Most campers will hire a car if they are carrying plenty of equipment, but couples travelling light can use the extensive train services (renfe.es) to take them along the coast or high into the Pyrenees.
The mountains abound with suitable campsites, depending on the level of comfort you require. The small town of Gosol features the excellent Cadi Vacances site (cadivacances.com), which offers facilities in bungalows or for tents. With a superb pool, sports facilities and restaurants, it offers the chance to camp in the midst of some of Spain's most spectacular scenery, beneath the looming twin peaks of the Pedraforca mountain. Numerous walks start from the campsite or Gosol.
For relaxation by the coast, on the Costa Brava, Camping Cala Llevado (calallevado.com) has an idyllic setting close to the resort of Lloret De Mar. The campsite has three beaches, one suitable for families, one ideal for bathers and another for naturists. Pitches are well shaded by trees, and there are pools, restaurants, a supermarket and play park on site.
Book ahead for peak periods
For the perfect camping holiday in Spain, it's usually preferable to avoid the crowds. Sites get busy at weekends, especially once the Spanish school holidays begin in mid-July. In June or September, especially midweek, you will find that the mountain sites are very placid. For the coast, pack plenty of sun block and insect repellent.
