Best Art Routes in Italy

Italy in known for its beauty, cuisine, rich history and much more. It is a country that is worth exploring, especially for art lovers. Depending on time availability, here are some suggestions of the best art routes to follow while travelling around Italy.

Starting in the northwest, begin the trip by visiting the historical city of Turin. While it may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of Italian art, this city is full of gems. Explore the expansive collection in the famous Egyptian Museum (Museo Egizio) that focuses on Egyptian archeology and anthropology. Turin also is home to a Museum of Ancient Art and plenty of street and urban art scattered throughout the city.

Heading east, stop off at the design and fashion capital of Milan. Leonardo da Vinci’s famous Last Supper is found in Santa Maria delle Grazie but it is advised to book tickets in advance. Make a visit at Pinacoteca di Brera where you will find numerous paintings from Bellini, Caravaggio, Bramante, Picasso and many others.

Continuing on further towards the Adriatic Sea lies the famous city of Venice. Once you finish taking a trip on the canal, stop off at The Peggy Guggenheim Collection that holds a plethora of works by artists from the first half of the 20th century. This city is also home to the world renown St. Mark’s Basilica and was the birthplace of Titian and Tintoretto to name a few.

Start making your way down to Bologna and spend time at the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of the History of Bologna. Continue south to the city of love and romance, Florence. Make sure to visit Michelangelo’s famous David. If time allows, head south to the capital city of Rome where there is no shortage of art galleries or museums. And then on to Naples and at the very southern tip, Palermo.
