Travel guide for Arizona
To outsiders, Arizona is probably most famous for the Grand Canyon. However there is so much more to this sprawling state: diverse cultures, incredible lunar-like landscapes and a surprising range of climates. From Wild West history to desert wilderness, there's so much to discover. Our guide could be a useful starting point.
The highlights of Arizona include:
Phoenix - As the largest city in the American south west, it's no surprise that Phoenix plays host to a range of sights and attractions, including historic neighbourhoods, excellent sporting venues and upscale shopping boutiques. However Phoenix is different from most major cities in an important way: it's located in the middle of the desert. Despite the city's sprawling size, you don't have to go far to find beautiful wilderness and rugged mountains.
Tucson - Arizona's second city is slightly cooler than its desert cousin, with an elevation of 2,400 feet. It's situated in the biologically diverse Sonoran Desert and is surrounded by a backdrop of beautiful mountains and national parks, including Saguaro National Park with its famous cactus forests.
The Grand Canyon - The Grand Canyon is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations, and for good reason. It's an awesome sight - an overwhelming experience showcasing the wonder of nature. The pristine rock layers and hovering condors will make even beginner photographers feel inspired.
Meteor Crater - Meteor Crater is considered by many to be the best preserved meteor crater on earth. It's located 18 miles from the town of Winslow, made famous by the Eagles' hit song 'Take It Easy,' with lyrics that talk about "standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona."
Monument Valley - Located on the borders between Utah and northern Arizona, Monument Valley is perhaps the most iconic example of the classic American West landscape. Enjoy the valley from an entirely different perspective by taking a hot air balloon ride at sunrise over some of the most amazing scenery on earth.
