Explore new options for apartments in the Canary Islands
Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote are the usual destinations for holiday makers looking apartments in the Canary Islands, but the smaller islands all have their own individual character and can help you escape the tourist hordes and the intrusive clamour of the larger resorts. Try a Canaries break with a difference next summer.
Off the beaten track
Escaping the obvious island resorts is not too difficult and it is usually possible to find apartments in those Canary Islands that are not on the regular tourist trail.
La Gomera has become a popular destination for walkers. Reached by ferry from Tenerife, this mountainous island is lush and green, criss-crossed by challenging trails. Low cloud can make it tricky to scale the summits on some days but, when the weather is clear, the vistas can be spectacular.
La Palma is the obvious island of choice for visitors who want to experience a little of the Canaries' colonial history. The main town of Santa Cruz is famous for its stylish 17th and 18th century houses. The island also fancies itself as a mini Cuba, growing its own tobacco and producing handmade cigars. La Palma has its own airport and a ferry terminal in Santa Cruz.
El Hierro means 'the anvil', perhaps due to the shape of the island, although it had the name long before it was mapped. The volcanic island has been designated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO with 60% of its land protected from development or intrusion. It has a small airport and a ferry connection to Tenerife.
Find the best deals
Booking apartments in the Canary Islands is very easy online, but occasionally it can be more economical to arrange bookings direct with apartment owners. On the smaller islands there is less accommodation and bargains are harder to find. Consider travelling outside the high season as the weather in the Canaries tends to be mild all year round.
