Abandoned Places in the World to visit

There are plenty of places scattered around the world that used to be bustling but have since been abandoned for one reason or another. While many of these places such as Chernobyl are almost impossible to visit, there are plenty of other unique abandoned places around the world to visit.

Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

At one time this was known as the world’s most expensive prison and was one of the first modern penitentiaries. It opened in 1829 and held famous prisoners such as Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton. It closed in 1971 but re-opened as a museum for the public to explore.

Chateau Miranda, Celles, Belgium

Originally this mansion was built by French aristocrats in 1866. It was then used as an orphanage in WWII but was completely abandoned in 1991 due to the high maintenance costs. Since then it has been in decay and is popular with ghost hunters and urban explorers.

Red Sands Sea Forts, Sealand, UK

The Maunsell forts are a well known sight to many sticking out over the River Thames. These were built in 1942 to provide anti-aircraft fire during the war and protect the river. They were decommissioned in the late 1950’s and have since been rusting away.

Beelitz Military Hospital, Berlin, Germany

This 60 building complex was built in the late 19th century and was initially used for tuberculosis patients. It was then used as a military hospital and in 1916 had Adolf Hitler as one of the patients who was recovering from war wounds. It has been unused since the late 1990’s with foliage taking over the empty wards and corridors. It also has been used as a set for the films ‘The Pianist’ and ‘Valkyrie’.
