With plenty of low cost flights to the Spanish capital, great night life and excellent restaurants, Madrid has become a hot destination. Here’s a list of must-see places to help you plan your weekend so that you can squeeze as much as possible into your stay.
Visit the ‘Triangle of Art’, so called for the three galleries, the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofia Art Centre and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum which are all near the Paseo del Prado, between Banco and Atocha metro stops.
Shop on the Calle Serrano in the swanky area of the ‘Barrio Salamanca’ or on the Calle Fuencarral and the central Gran Via, which has just celebrated its centenary. Madrid’s atmospheric ‘Rastro’ (flea market) is held on Sunday’s near the Puerto de Toledo.
Visit the Puerta del Sol, the very centre of Madrid and the nearby Plaza Mayor. The grandiose Royal Palace and Plaza de Oriente are just a few minutes’ walk away.
Head to the central Plaza Santa Ana for bars and restaurants and the nearby Calle Huertas is good for live music venues.
Stroll in the Retiro Park and forget you’re in a capital city, row on the lake, or simply enjoy a cool drink at one of the cafés.
